DOE ranks all houses collaborating in the Builders Challenge on the EnergySmart Home scale. Today's common new houses score a hundred on this scale, while zero-energy houses, which produce as much power as they consume, score a nil. For the Builders Challenge, all houses must rank a seventy or better to qualify, making them essentially 30 percent more effective than the average new home built to global energy potency codes.
